Frequently Asked Questions
When is Florida scallop season?
The Fenholloway through Suwannee Rivers Zone, which includes Steinhatchee and Keaton Beach, is open June 15 through Labor Day. In 2026 that means June 15 through Monday, September 7. Bag limits change partway through: from June 15 to 30 the limit is 1 gallon of whole scallops in the shell or 1 cup of shucked meat per person, with a maximum of 5 gallons whole or 2 pints shucked per vessel. From July 1 through Labor Day the limit rises to 2 gallons whole or 1 pint of meat per person, with a maximum of 10 gallons whole or a half gallon of meat per vessel, regardless of how many harvesters are aboard. Always confirm current rules with FWC before your trip.
What’s included in a scallop season package?
Your stay includes the cabin or RV site plus full use of the property: boat and trailer parking inside the gate, the fish cleaning shed, the outdoor shower, the laundry facility, the community grill and picnic area, the fire pit, and the stock-tank cowboy pool. Cabins come with a full kitchen, private bathroom, linens and towels, smart TV, and Wi-Fi. Boats, gear, guides, and licenses are not included.
How many people can stay in the cabins?
The Fisherman’s Cabin and the Hunter’s Cabin each sleep up to four, with a queen bed in the bedroom and a set of bunk beds in the living area. The Gator Hut sleeps three. The two RV sites accommodate 50-amp rigs with full hookups.
Can I bring my own boat?
Yes. Boat parking is available on site inside the gated fence. Let the hosts know your rig length when you book, especially if your group is bringing more than one boat, so space can be arranged before you arrive.
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes. Harvesting bay scallops recreationally in Florida requires a valid Florida recreational saltwater fishing license unless you qualify for an exemption. Guests fishing aboard a licensed charter are generally covered by the vessel’s license. Licenses are available through GoOutdoorsFlorida.com, and current exemptions are listed on the FWC site.
Are your cabins pet friendly?
Yes. The property is fully fenced and gated, which makes it easier to travel with a dog. Cabins are limited to one dog with a $100 pet fee, and dogs must be leashed outside the cabin. RV sites allow up to two dogs. Please tell the hosts in advance if you are bringing a pet.
How far are you from the boat ramp?
Steinhatchee Boat Ramp is about a five-minute drive. The Jena boat ramp on the Dixie County side of the river is about ten minutes.
What should I bring for scalloping?
Mask, snorkel, and fins for each person, a mesh bag or scallop scoop, a cooler with plenty of ice, and a divers-down warning device, which Florida law requires whenever anyone is in the water. Scallops may only be taken by hand or with a landing or dip net. Also pack sunscreen, water shoes, bug spray, your own beach towels, charcoal for the grill, and groceries, though there are markets nearby.
How early should I book?
As early as you can. There are five units total, and the June 15 opening week along with July and August weekends tend to go first. A 50% non-refundable deposit reserves your dates, with the balance due at check-in.
Is parking available for boats and trailers?
Yes. Boat and trailer parking is available on the fenced, gated property alongside vehicle parking. Call ahead for groups arriving with multiple trailers.
